Built on a bluff above the Connecticut River, this 4000 square foot house is affectionately known as the ‘random house’, owing to the arrangement of its lively roofscape of shed dormers, and the random spacing of its board & batten siding, trellis members, floorboards, and tile patterns.
The shape of house bends to enclose a sunny courtyard in front, while in back it unfolds to allow sweeping views of the river. A generously-sized shaded deck extends the full width of the house and allows large gatherings to effortlessly spill outdoors.
Many homes with an attached garage relegate the homeowners, who invariably arrive by car, to enter through a humdrum mudroom. The arrangement here allows the homeowners to enter their home directly into a stone-tiled entry hall, giving them a welcoming experience that in some homes is reserved only for occasional guests.
