DESIGN PROCESS
Centerbrook has pioneered techniques to engage clients, building inhabitants and other stakeholders directly and actively in the creative process, whether the project is a private home, a university campus or a large urban development.
CREDENTIALS
Centerbrook has 36 architects, of whom 23 are LEED accredited (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). The firm has completed 6 LEED projects. In addition, two LEED projects are under construction, and four are in the design stage. In all, the firm has worked on 51 projects that involve one or more sustainable features. The firm is a member of the U.S. Green Building Council. The company also houses training and educational programs for its architectural staff, including a formal Intern Development Program, as well as an on-site training facility for CAD operation, quality assurance, code compliance, project management, and technical/product updates.
SUSTAINABLE DESIGN STARTS AT HOME
Centerbrook has long track record of sustainable design, beginning in its own backyard. Renewable systems, including a dam on the property that has been a hydropower source since the 17th century, are used to generate almost 40 percent of the firm’s electrical needs. Centerbrook’s offices are a living laboratory for green architecture and feature the following:
About 11 percent of the firm’s electricity derives from a 7.5 kilowatt hydropower turbine
Another 19 percent of Centerbrook’s electrical needs is provided by solar panels
A geothermal heating/cooling pump reduces annual electrical consumption by 8 percent
A 400-square-foot green roof helps reduce air pollution, absorbs storm water runoff, and insulates the office space below.
A comprehensive office recycling program, including composting of organic wastes
