Centerbrook clients span a wide spectrum, which helps account for the unusual diversity of the firm's work. Clients include colleges, universities, arts and other non-profit entities, schools, municipalities, corporations, and private individuals.
Centerbrook is proud that approximately 75 percent of its clients return to the firm for architectural services, often over many years. Institutional clients who value design quality and responsive service are chief among these.
Examples are Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory on Long Island, where Centerbrook has designed laboratory and other facilities since 1973; Quinnipiac University, where Centerbrook has designed a wide range of buildings, many of them new, since 1978; and Dartmouth College, where Centerbrook has designed new and renovated buildings since 1981.
"On behalf of the entire Academy community I would like to thank you and your team for the outstanding effort of Centerbrook Architects on this highly successful project [Phelps Academy Center]....The building has truly become the campus center and serves the students, faculty, and staff like no other campus resource."
Roger F. Wakeman, P.E.
Director of Facilities Management,
Phillips Exeter Academy
Exeter, New Hampshire
"To call this a "job well done" would be an understatement. I really do not know how we could ask for a finer facility. Our students and their parents love [Almetris] Duren Residence Hall. This is as good as it gets."
Floyd B. Hoelting
Director, Division of Housing and Food Service
University of Texas at Austin
"The result is breathtaking...I can't wait to see how we live in this space[the New Upper School Building], and so far I am ecstatic with what I see...Our architects have addressed all of our criteria in an exciting and innovative manner."
Rebecca Upham
Head of School,
Buckingham Browne & Nichols School
Cambridge, Massachusetts
"The Information Cafe continues to be one of the most popular and photographed spaces at the University. We are deeply indebted to you and your staff for the vision, creative ideas, and perseverance that made the project such a resounding success."
Brinley Franklin
Director of University Libraries
University of Connecticut
"...the
most impressive single thing about that firm [Centerbrook Architects and
Planners] is their ability to listen to what you really want and their willingness
to visit the campus 1,000 times to get the smallest detail right. I've never
worked with an architect before who gave us what we asked for!"
Jonathan M. Daube
President, Manchester Community College
Manchester, Connecticut
"...much of what the students and their teacher are experiencing on this fall morning is utterly new, made possible by the spectacular facilities in the Phelps Science Center...the state-of-the-art science center places Exeter in the forefront of science education....
"Students
are coming to the Science Center to hang out. This is a complete change -
180 degrees from where we were last year. The students wanted to get out of
Thompson as quickly as possible when class was over. Now we have students
checking out of the dorm at night to go work in the science center lounge."
The Exeter Bulletin, Winter 2002
"I...am
very proud of our new home and all we accomplished together, despite the many
challenges we encountered. The building [School of Business] and its infrastructure
are all I ever hoped for and more."
Thomas G. Gutteridge
Dean and Distinguished Professor of Management
School of Business, University of Connecticut, Storrs
"...we feel that the aesthetics, the design and construction processes, and the ultimate functionality of this Center [Kilpatrick Athletic Center] have all been extraordinary....
"We found that the architects listened well, incorporated our ideas effectively in the design, and created a facility that met all of our needs....
"They did this in a facility whose design we find both beautiful and thoroughly functional....The building created so much excitement that we filled our membership rolls and had a waiting list of 300+ people within weeks of opening....
"That
all of this was accomplished with style, on time, and on budget is all that
any client could ask of an architect or a building, and we are very grateful."
Bernard F. Rodgers, Jr.
Vice President and Dean of the College
Simon's Rock College at Bard
Great Barrington, Massachusetts
"This
project [Garde Arts Center] is a success on every level. The beauty of the
space has the community in awe...We have seen an increase in attendance
in all events, especially mid-week events. This is due in a large part to
the welcoming exterior design that the architect provided. Many people refer
to the theatre as 'the jewel of New London....'we are delighted with the
space and the work of the architects."
Steven M. Sigel
Executive Director
Garde Arts Center, New London, Connecticut
"I
am writing this from my desk on the third floor of the new Art and Art History
Building at Colgate that has been manifested from idea to paper to place.
It is magnificent. Everyone here is moving in a dream like state. Visitors
are left speechless and the students cannot imagine what awaits them. The
proportions, spaces and the functional potential that the building allows
stand above anything that I have seen in my thirty plus years of working in
college art facilities...Centerbrook did an absolutely brilliant job. This
is a building for the ages..."
John Knecht
Department Chair
Professor of Art and Art History
Colgate University, Hamilton, New York
"It is very exciting to work in a building [Chemistry Building] described by colleagues (both local and distant) as 'the best example of this type of building in the country...'
"Our greatest satisfaction with our new 'home' is that it is superbly well organized to allow us to do the work that we do safely and efficiently. From the design of individual rooms to the interrelationships among the different spaces, we users find the building a wonderful workplace. A number of my colleagues have mentioned how much of a joy it is to come to work in the morning.
"The
building is also considered the visual jewel of all of the new campus construction....The
beautiful spaces found in the interior of the building give users and visitors
alike a sense of uplift that puts our day to day tasks into perspective."
Arthur W. Dimock
Chair, Building Committee
Department of Chemistry
University of Connecticut, Storrs
"Now that the doors of the Stepping Stones Museum for Children are poised to open to the public, I personally, and on behalf of the building committee, want to thank you for your creative architectural vision. You have endowed the building with a spirit and childlike whimsy that speaks to the heart of the Stepping Stones mission. It is a building that will allow everyone who enters, regardless of their age to get in touch with the magic of childhood discovery....
"The
building you created will have a wonderful impact on the children that experience
it for many years to come..."
Bruce Beinfield, AIA
Building Committee
Stepping Stones Museum for Children
Norwalk, Connecticut
"I am writing on behalf of the members of the First Congregational Church to express our appreciation to you and all of the employees of Centerbrook who were affiliated with our project. Your cooperation, help, and willingness to work as a team with us, the Contractor, Acoustician, and Organ Builder is something we recognize, appreciate, and value....
"...we
are grateful for a good working relationship throughout these past several
years and are very pleased with the end result of our renovated building.
Thank you for your help and support!"
David D. Young
Senior Minister
First Congregational Church, Battle Creek, Michigan
" 'Not
only was the Class of 2004 selected from the largest applicant pool in Brandeis
history, it was the sixth such record pool in the past seven years,' says
Michael Kalafatas '65, Director of Admissions. 'Each class continues to build
on the strength and diversity of those that came before....'
"Kalafatas believes his work with campus visitors is greatly enhanced
by the Carl and Ruth Shapiro Admissions Center. This summer, during July and
August alone, the Center welcomed 3,000 visitors. In the future, the new Shapiro
Campus Center will make an equally strong impression on prospective students
touring the campus."
Brandeis Review President's Report Issue, Volume 21
Number 1, 2000
"The Board toured the renovated spaces of the School House, Monell and the Technology Center and had a good opportunity to appreciate the new "back porch" and the landscaping. There was universal praise among Board members for Pomfret's new look. Both faculty and students reported at Board committee meetings what a positive impact the campus improvements have had on the life of the campus, and Brad [Brad Hastings, Headmaster] recounted similar feelings expressed by parents at Parents' Weekend.
"I
want to thank you for your professionalism, dedication to Pomfret and fine
architectural sense. Pomfret is blessed to have had you and your Centerbrook
colleagues working with us during the design and construction process. The
new Pomfret should be a feather in your firm's cap."
George T. Shaw, Esq.
Chair, Buildings and Grounds Committee
Pomfret School, Pomfret, Connecticut
"Centerbrook's response...was superb. They listened carefully to our goals and made sure that they understood them. They took time to understand, in detail, the nature of the library operations that needed to be accommodated. Communication between library staff as clients and the architects as designers and planners was exceptionally effective. They grasped issues quickly and intelligently, providing many options to consider before settling on those that genuinely satisfied our requirements. They demonstrated a high degree of flexibility and responsiveness, listening effectively, never forcing solutions that were unacceptable to us as the client. Their work was timely - moving the project along at a rapid pace....
"The
end result [Information Cafe, Babbidge Library] was a design that not
only met our functional requirements successfully but one that did so with
great imagination and creativity. Having worked with many architectural firms
over the course of my career I would easily rate our collaboration with Centerbrook
as among the most effective - and enjoyable - of any that I have experienced."
David Kapp
Associate Director, Collections and Information Services, University Libraries
University of Connecticut, Storrs
