Charles Mueller’s family made a tradition of visiting historic cities and towns in Switzerland, where the rich fabric of life, as well as the tapestry of buildings, people, and culture mesmerized him as a young child. He was fascinated by the design mix of medieval and modern imagery.
To help pay his way through college at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island, Mueller worked painting the galleries at the school’s art museum, which houses one of the largest collegiate fine art collections in the country. He was profoundly affected by the power that made each piece of artwork unique.
Upon Mueller’s graduation in 1984, Robert L. Harper, FAIA, a founding partner of Centerbrook’s predecessor firm Moore Grover Harper, and adjunct faculty member at RISD, insisted that he come to work for Centerbrook.
Mueller is an architect intent on infusing the familiar with the distinctive by delving deeply into the history of both client and place. He is not opposed to taking excursions or road trips to gain inspiration, a joyful tradition rooted in the travels of his childhood, a tradition of exploration that he shares today with his clients.
While he is a sought after residential architect, Mueller also has more than 25 years of experience designing a variety of academic and museum buildings for clients such as Quinnipiac University, Dartmouth College, and Milton School. He was named a principal in Centerbrook Architects in 2002 and is a member of the American Institute of Architects.
