Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory’s campus was originally a whaling village and is an historic place. Centerbrook and CSHL have worked together since 1973 to adapt the Laboratory’s historic buildings to the requirements of biomedical research while carefully inserting new buildings on campus. The result is a village of science – one unique among the world’s scientific research institutions. The Hillside Research facilities will continue this rich environment.
Now under construction, the new Hillside Research Campus is a major expansion of facilities on Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory’s 110-acre site. Six new buildings will add approximately 100,000 square feet of research space. These laboratories will pioneer a new era of biomedical discovery at CSHL in human genetics and neurobiology.
The research buildings frame a multi-level courtyard that forms a grand entrance and pathway to a future hill-top campus. Stairways and plazas between the laboratories provide opportunities for informal meetings and conversations. The buildings are connected internally on their lower levels to allow easy communication and interaction among scientists.
